Reporting Health & Safety Concerns in the Workplace

Under the Occupational Health & Safety Act there is a clear process for members to advance Health and Safety concerns in the work place. The first step is to report the Health and Safety concern immediately to a supervisor or management representative. This can be done verbally or in writing. The Employer will then have an opportunity to respond and address the concern. If the member feels the response is unsatisfactory members are encouraged to speak with a worker representative of the workplace Joint Health and Safety Committee to provide information on the health and safety issue and the Employers response. The Joint Health and Safety Committee can review the information and may convene a meeting or discussion to advance the issue. The committee has the power under the Act to make a recommendation to the Employer regarding the issue and the remedy and the Employer has a set time to respond.
